In the middle part of 2021, the rising tide of the global economy rose to the point of all ten of the top richest people having net worths north of $100 billion for the first time in history....

During a two-week trial, the courtroom heard from Maragos’s former Eagles teammates, including Nick Foles, Trey Burton, and Jordan Hicks. In the end, Maragos was awarded $43.5 million in damages. Roman Orthopedics is an official partner of the Eagles, though the team itself isn’t involved in the lawsuit....

Now, the surviving heirs of Paul von Mendelssohn-Bartholdy want the painting back, $690 million in damages for Sompo’s alleged “unjust enrichment” in acquiring the painting, and another $750 million in punitive damages. That comes to more than $1.4 billion in total damages, a good deal more even than the $40 million Sompo paid for the painting back in the 1980s, which at the time made it the most expensive painting in history....

The work in question is entitled Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), and was purchased by Lewis back in 1995 for an undisclosed price from entertainment exec David Geffen, but his betting instincts came not just in whatever profit margin he made but the fact that he declined to offer the painting up to bidders with any reserve, which would have locked in a minimum price. The two paintings recently added to Griffin’s collection are 1955’s Interchanged by Willem de Kooning, and 1948’s Number 17A by Jackson Pollock.
